FUMA Contemporary Tokyo | BUNKYO ART is pleased to announce “Next Tales of…” a solo exhibition by Kohei Yamada, opening on April 11. The exhibition will feature a series of new paintings, centered around six works originally created for “The Secrets of Color: From Impressionism to Contemporary Art” (2024–2025) at the Pola Museum of Art. Among these is a significant oil painting produced as an homage to Claude Monet’s Water Lilies from the museum’s permanent collection.
Artist Statement:
Over the past ten years of my artistic career, I have employed character-like forms and meticulous rendering to appropriate the masters and masterpieces of modern and contemporary art, as well as widely recognized cultural subjects. Through these references, my work continuously weaves together a sense of both admiration and irony.
The aforementioned exhibition marked my first major stage, an opportunity where my own creations were displayed alongside the very artists and artworks I have revered since I first aspired to pursue art. The joy and profound emotion of that experience were truly exceptional.
In this current exhibition, I would be honored if you could experience the large-scale works that represent the culmination of my practice thus far, together with the new directions my art is now taking.
