Our presentation reconsiders the cross-generational development of abstraction in Japan by examiningthe works by 3 artists. Their practices – from inquiries into the structural foundations, to thevisualisation of cognitive processes, and to reorganisation of image as an environment – demonstratehow the possibilities of abstraction have continually expanded.

The Emergence of Structure: In the 70s and 80s, Toeko Tatsuno deepened her exploration ofconstructed surfaces. The underlying sense of discipline formed a reconsideration of framework. Withinthe structures, subtle fluctuations of color introduce a quiet psychological resonance, and it is thiscoexistence that defines her abstraction.

Visual Slippage: Toshiyuki Konishi inherits a structural mode of thinking while updating it for a post-digital environment. By revealing how vision is generated and destabilised through the discrepancy ofrepetition, he transforms abstraction into a “movement of cognition”.

Transgressing the Image: Takuro Tamayama extends abstraction into objects and architectural elementsthat engage the surrounding environment. Blurring the boundary between material and image, engagingthe viewer’s bodily perception, and redefines installation as an abstract space.
